Life has a way of smacking you right between the eyes sometimes. Pam and I were in Baltimore ( A nice city, I had not been there but will likely return ) last weekend. On Sat at midnight the son of my best friend in chiropractic called. His Dad had had a major heart attack. He subsequently had a triple bypass and is recovering nicely. It did get me to thinking about our mortality and what we should do about it.
As my 40th high school reunion is this summer, I was kind of thinking along those lines any way but this was a face the facts moment. For the next however many lines lets talk about what we should do as we age.
Nope, I am not going to give financial advice although I would recommend making sure your loved ones are taken care of should something happen to you. I am going to do what I have done in most of my blog entries. I am going to talk about the human side of this issue.
Rick was way overweight so the obvious thought is lose weight. But how you lose it is the key. If you are grossly overweight, I would not discourage you from a binge diet to start with. You know, the fruit juice, Mayo clinic, cabbage soup, lose mega weight diet. I know psychologically, that a quick couple of dozen pounds is a good thing
Now comes the fun part. OK not so much fun. Next, start a diet of sensibly eating less and eating before 7 PM.
Add exercise and you are on a winning formula. What type of exercise? Walking! If you have not been exercising, start by walking 10 minutes. By four weeks you should be up to 20 minutes. Then just add minutes as you are comfortable. Walk at least every other day. Bad knees or ankles? Try bike riding. Stationary or outside is fine. Same regimen.
These very simple thoughts can change your life. Next blog I will tackle the mental portion of aging. Till next time. God bless
